Web Designers Have become fundamentally useless
Web designers were traditionally responsible for the presentation and visual experience of websites, while developers handled the more intricate technical functionality. Web design typically followed several structured phases, and in many cases the designer acted as the primary point of coordination—managing UX design, graphics, video content, social media assets, and client communication. When a larger team was involved, the web designer would collaborate closely with UX designers and systems or backend developers to deliver the highest-quality product for the client. This division of responsibility remains the correct and safest approach, particularly when a full-stack developer is not available to manage every aspect of a project.
The fundamental problem today is that many designers are now “vibe coding” their functionality—relying on AI tools to generate code they do not fully understand. At the same time, they are producing base images through AI, editing assets directly in the browser, and generating low-quality, automated social media video content. This workflow often results in rushed, poorly structured output that prioritizes speed over quality, security, and maintainability. The issue is not the tools themselves, but the lack of technical understanding and accountability behind their use. This is turning the web into a slop farm
This approach introduces serious risks. Designers who blindly deploy AI-generated functionality without coding knowledge almost always unknowingly introduce vulnerabilities, break core features, or expose sensitive client data. When systems fail, are hacked, or leak information, responsibility ultimately falls on the person who implemented the solution—regardless of whether the code was AI-generated. In many cases, these risks are not even recognized until real damage has already been done.
As a result, skilled developers are needed now more than ever. AI does not replace coders; it amplifies the consequences of poor technical decisions. Proper architecture, security awareness, testing, and long-term maintainability still require experienced engineers who understand what is happening under the hood.
In this evolving landscape, careful planning of roles, workflows, and the marketplace itself is more critical than ever. Teams must clearly define responsibilities, respect professional boundaries, and use AI as a supporting tool—not a substitute for expertise. Without this discipline, the industry risks sacrificing quality, safety, and trust for short-term convenience.
